Review by Deb
A GUIDE TO NORWEGIAN GENEALOGY, EMIGRATION AND TRANSMIGRATION is the most comprehensive and treasure trove for the research of Norwegian genealogy! I will go so far as to call it the BIBLE of Norsk family research, as written by Liv Marit Haakenstad. Live Marit presented at the Valdres Samband in Minneapolis recently and I was somewhat reluctant to purchase yet another book to aid my genealogy research and add to my collection. Could there really be anything new? By the time I made up my mind to purchase, all her books were sold but was told it was available on Amazon. Upon its arrival, I was beyond impressed at the massive amount of information and resources that were compiled into just one book! I immediately sat down and started highlighting new areas to explore, many of which are FREE and without subscription!
Liv Marit consolidated information on a broad spectrum of information that propelled our Norwegian ancestors to immigrate, their journeys according to timelines of emigration, legislations of the time periods that prompted emigration coupled with the myriad of challenges emigrants faced all with resources to enrich your personal research. Her resources are both Norwegian and US based. I was in awe of her work. LIv Marit brings legitimacy to her work with a heavily referenced tome, yet it is extremely easy to read and follow.
If you are just starting your research or have been collecting information for years, this book will not only get you started but also compliment previous research. She places events into context while providing new avenues to extend your current level of work. I consider this book a MUST HAVE in your library. If there is only ONE Norwegian genealogy book you want to purchase this is it! I’ve traveled to numerous seminars and subscribed to various historical and cultural societies to over the years to expand my knowledge base of Norwegian heritage but A GUIDE TO NORWEGIAN GENEALOGY, EMIGRATION AND TRANSMIGRATION is the best I’ve encountered in 15 years! It will not disappoint! I hope you enjoy it!
